What’s in Our Air? Community Lunch & Learn Brings Diamond Valley Together

Residents attend Diamond Valley Community Air Quality Lunch & Learn hosted by Sustainable Life and CRAZ

This week, Griffith’s Community Centre became a space for thoughtful conversation, science-based learning, and local engagement as community members gathered for Sustainable Life’s What’s in Our Air? Lunch & Learn, presented in partnership with Calgary Region Airshed Zone (CRAZ).

With 16 attendees and 10 participants signing up for future updates, the event demonstrated something important: people care deeply about the air they breathe—they simply need opportunities to connect with credible information and practical local context.

CRAZ provided an accessible and informative presentation on regional air monitoring, wildfire smoke, public health, and the tools communities can use to better understand local air quality trends. For many in attendance, it was the first time they had been introduced to the broader systems already in place for monitoring and planning around air quality.

A Strong Community Response

One of the most encouraging parts of the event was the quality of the audience’s questions.

Residents raised meaningful concerns ranging from local monitoring to broader environmental influences, and one particularly engaged community member was invited directly by the presenting air quality scientist to use the microphone—an excellent example of genuine public dialogue in action.

Throughout the event, attendees repeatedly expressed appreciation for both the information provided and the importance of creating spaces where science, local experience, and community awareness can meet.

Why Events Like This Matter

Air quality is often treated as something abstract—until wildfire smoke rolls in, unusual odours appear, or questions arise about industrial activity, seasonal conditions, or public health.

But awareness doesn’t begin during crisis.

It begins with education.

By bringing together residents, experts, and local organizations, this Lunch & Learn helped strengthen Diamond Valley’s ability to ask better questions, understand available tools, and participate more meaningfully in environmental conversations that affect daily life.

Community members engage in local environmental education event focused on air quality awareness.
