Rain Tote Project
Community Water Resilience, One Home at a Time

Rain tote installed at a local residence to capture rainwater for garden use.
The Rain Tote Project helps local households capture and reuse rainwater for gardens, trees, and landscaping. By keeping rainwater on site, the project reduces pressure on municipal water systems while building practical, long-term water resilience at the household level.
The Rain Tote Project supports gradual, household-level water resilience throughout the community.
Why This Project Matters
Water resilience is built locally. Capturing rain where it falls:
- Reduces demand on treated municipal water
- Supports gardens, trees, and drought-resilient landscaping
- Helps households adapt to increasing variability in rainfall
The Rain Tote Project focuses on practical action that residents can understand, participate in, and benefit from directly.
What Participation Looks Like
Participation is simple and happens at a pace that works for each household.
A typical installation includes:
• Placement of a 1,000-litre food-grade tote beside an existing downspout
• Connection to capture roof runoff
• A screened inlet and standard outlet valve
• Immediate access to stored water for outdoor use
The system operates passively, requires no power, and integrates naturally into the home environment.
Many households begin with a single tote and expand later if needed.
A small number of systems are prepared each season as part of the ongoing Rain Tote Project.
